Red Trumpet

Back when I had a period of being semi-unemployed, I kept finding things to do that I keep saying I’ll do but end up never doing. One of those things I have had good intentions of doing for years is to resume playing my trumpet. One thing I’ve sorely missed for many years is playing, and especially playing with a group. Math Tattoos

I’ve always wanted to be good at math – for real. I actually enjoyed math but I was fairly terrible at it. I don’t think I really ever had any good math teachers in life anyhow. I was particularly bored with the easy stuff and actually did well with the harder stuff. Maybe someday, just for the hell of it, I’ll take a math course. Ha! Who are we kidding. I’ve been contemplating getting the number 17 tattooed for my next tattoo, which will be my seventeenth. Yes, I’m a dork – but I was curious as to what a number tattoo would look like so over to Google image search I headed. Read the rest of this entry »

Do you have a friend who thinks that everything that their horoscope says is absolutely true? Sick of hearing your coworker reading everyone’s horoscope to everyone in the morning? Share this with them and see how they react.  Read the rest of this entry »

When your mother-in-law crinkles her nose at you while you chug a beer with your Thanksgiving dinner, put down the mug and tell her this story.

It’s that time of year again. I wait with bated breath each and every year for Brown’s Brewing Company to put their famous Pumpkin Ale on tap. It is hands down the best pumpkin ale I’ve ever encountered and has become a yearly tradition among myself and my friends to consume as much of the glorious pumpkin ale as possible before it’s all gone again for yet another year. It’s not on tap yet but when it is I’ll post a review of it. I promise. Read the rest of this entry »

July 4th – The Beer Day

Posted: July 3, 2010 in Beer

I always assumed that Super Bowl Sunday was the day that the most beer was consumed by Americans but that day actually ranks at tenth! Cinco de Mayo is number five, St Patrick’s Day doesn’t even make the top ten, and July 4th clocks in at number one. Funny how perception v. reality can be so skewed! These rankings by the way are based on the number of cases sold as ranked by The Nielsen Company. Read the rest of this entry »

The Ben Franklin (Beer) Project

Posted: June 29, 2010 in Beer

Here at The Record we are in the midst of preparations for “The Ben Franklin Project” and the building is buzzing with activity. If you aren’t familiar with what exactly that is, you should read up on it (after you finish reading Better Living Through Beer of course) and you may be surprised about what a revolutionary (pun intended) project it is. Wedding Beers

Posted: June 22, 2010 in Beer

This past weekend I went to my second wedding of the season. I’m at that age where all my friends are getting married and when I had my own wedding last summer I of course needed to make sure that the beer offerings were perfect. Read the rest of this entry »

Bacon Beer?

Beer and Wings

Adam and Eve. Gumby and Pokey. Jekyll and Hyde. Laverne and Shirley. Mary and Rhoda. Pinky and The Brain. Tom and Jerry. Will and Grace. Beer and Wings. Some pairs are just forever in the books of history. Today we look at the quintessential pair of Wings and Beer. Read the rest of this entry »

Beer-B-Q

Posted: May 25, 2010 in Beer

Memorial Day weekend is nearly here… although the forecast today makes me tempted to call an “emergency bbq” instead of going to work! As we get into this weekend you need more than knowing what charcoal to use and how long to keep the cow on the grill – today’s Better Living Through Beer arms you with the knowledge of what beer makes the holiday complete! Welcome to American Craft Beer Week

Posted: May 17, 2010 in Beer

Here we are! The biggest week of the year for beer! It’s American Craft Beer Week. Organized by the Brewers Association (of which I’m a member) as a means of celebrating small and independent brewers all across America. The week became a national event in 2006 and just a handful of years later Congress is getting involved! In April the goals and ideals that are the basis of the week became a topic of discussion via House Resolution 1297 Read the rest of this entry »

The Three C’s

Posted: May 14, 2010 in Beer

Beer. It’s your buddy at the game, with a slice, on the lawnmower, between frames, and sometimes standing around the grill. It should be your buddy elsewhere too and with just a tad bit of knowledge you’ll be able to have your bff beer with you more often than you do now. When’s the last time someone asked you (or you asked) what wine goes with chicken, or pasta, or any other meal? Forget the wine! Bring on the beer! Read the rest of this entry »

Beer Is My Hobby

Posted: May 12, 2010 in Beer

When I tell people my hobby is beer, they often react with a laugh but the truth is beer is serious business. Most people are unaware of a rapidly growing subculture that is all about beer – making it, tasting it, pairing it with food, and just overall loving it. Even if beer isn’t your beverage of choice there are many fascinating historical and cultural aspects to almost every style; beer even played a role in the formation of our nation. Beer is also the third most popular drink in the world behind water and tea. Water isn’t that exciting to blog about and although I don’t dislike tea, it isn’t my bag. Read the rest of this entry »
